The Flaherty Group’s history dates back to the early 1980s, when Tim and Marie first entered the real estate business. In 1987 they opened Tim Flaherty Real Estate, a business they successfully owned and operated for 20 years. In 2007, Tim Flaherty Real Estate was acquired by Prudential Northeast Properties of Bangor which became Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices Northeast Real Estate.
In 2015, Tim and Marie re-opened the family business, this time as The Flaherty Group – the longtime moniker for their team.
They’re proud to be joined by some of the best real agents they’ve worked with over the years — Maryea Curtis, Elizabeth Mitschele, Karen Thompson and Kim Gouzie. By combining their collective talents and backgrounds, The Flaherty Group strives to give every client the service they deserve.
Marie Flaherty’s real estate career is defined by education, involvement, and results. Marie’s professional designations include: GRI (Graduate, Realtor Institute), ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative), CRS (Certified Residential Specialist), and SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist). She earned the exclusive Fine Homes Specialist designation through Prudential Real Estate, and accrued dozens of awards for her high sales production levels within the Prudential and Berkshire Hathaway nationwide networks.
Marie’s clients appreciate her honest feedback, eye for design, and willingness to make upfront investments that result in sales. Marie is a past president of the Portland Board of Realtors and the Maine Real Estate Information System (governing body of the MLS), and was honored by her peers as Realtor of the Year in 2002. She is the 2015 President of the Maine Association of Realtors.

Tim Flaherty is the designated Broker of The Flaherty Group, and an active listing and buyer agent.
Over the years, Tim has earned a loyal following for both his integrity and his deep knowledge of home construction and land use. In addition to listing and selling residential property, Tim has developed several neighborhoods in the greater Portland area, including Brydon Farm and Wildwood in Westbrook, Olde Birch Lane in Portland, Stonebrooke in Scarborough and Bowdoin Drive in Falmouth. He also offers consulting services for outside developers.
Tim graduated from Portland High School in 1974 and studied real estate at the University of Southern Maine.

Karen Thompson is a Maine native who knows the neighborhoods, the homes, and importantly, the people. She has been involved in real estate and development for the majority of her adult life. Over the past 26 years, she as staged and sold sixteen homes (investments and personal residences), and was a partner in a townhouse project at Sugarloaf Mountain, where she worked on floor plans, decorated and staged the model home.
She joined The Flaherty Group in 2015, bringing not only her experience with real estate, but also a strong background in education and communications – two of the foundational characteristics of an ideal real estate agent.
For 30 years, Karen owned and operated a successful private preschool in the Lewiston/Auburn area. In this role, she developed the hard and soft skills involved in running a business that caters to families at a formative, important time.
Through daily communication, she built strong relationships of respect and trust with parents and grandparents, understanding the necessity of taking action and getting results to maintain her reputation. She learned to coach, counsel, and help families balance their wants and needs in ways that made sense for their circumstances, an approach that was validated when many of her students became parents and then enrolled their young children in her school.
Today, she brings that same approach to every real estate client relationship.
Karen is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, where she earned her B.S. in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Communications. She loves to be outdoors and take advantage of all Maine’s seasons – hiking, biking, skiing and especially golfing.

Maryea Curtis is an experienced Realtor who works both with buyers and sellers. She is detail-oriented and prompt, and is a strong communicator, negotiator, and fiduciary advocate for the clients she serves.
Maryea entered the real estate business in 2004, inspired by a love of architecture. To her surprise, though, it wasn’t just the homes that made her love this job – it was the people. Assisting people with buying and selling a home is largely about helping them transition to a new phase of life, and Maryea considers it a privilege to be involved in that process.
Prior to real estate she worked in sales, home health care, and financial management – positions that honed her skills in diverse and important ways.
When Maryea is not working, you’re likely to find her at home with her husband and preschool-age daughter having a tea party. You might also find her at the ocean, or downtown Portland – enjoying what it means to live in Maine.
